Pro Tip: When choosing Astral pool filters, it’s always better to oversize. Oversizing your pool filter means that you will have longer cycles in between filter cleaning or backwashes. Oversized filters will also reduce the overall stress on your pool pumps by allowing your filters to catch more dirt and debris before the pressure increases.

Types of Astral Pool Filters
There are two main types of Astral pool filters: cartridge filters and sand filters. Astral Cartridge filters like the ZX series are cylindrical tanks with a paper element inside. Astral Sand filters like the CA series are a larger round tank, usually 60 to 80 cm / 25 in to 27 in diameter, and filled with sand or glass filtration media.Astral Cartridge Filters VS Astral Sand Filters: Maintenance
Astral Cartridge pool filters require far more maintenance versus astral sand filters, with the internal element requiring cleaning, and are known to clog quite easily, especially with heavy debris and pool chemicals. Astral Sand filters have a much larger capacity and have little to no issues with clogging while using pool chemicals and can easily be remedied with a good backwash cycle.Tip: If an Astral filter cartridge is clogged, it can usually be remedied by giving it a good hose down with a Water TechniX Waterwand or a soak in some specially formulated Water TechniX Filter Cleaning Solution.
Astral Cartridge Filters VS Astral Sand Filters: Cost
Initially, Astral cartridge filter systems cost less to set-up than Astral sand filter systems, but if we look at it on a long-term basis, the costs will eventually even out after 5 years. The final choice boils down to whether you're willing to deal with up-front costs versus maintenance.Astral Cartridge Filters VS Astral Sand Filters: Clarity
In a perfect world Astral cartridge filters provide better water clarity due to their ability to filter out smaller particles. But in reality, cloudy water is usually the result of a dirty or poor performing filter. Cleaning a cartridge filter can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, and would use 200 to 300 litres of water (via a hose) to clean. The Sand Filter cleaning process (depending on size) Takes about 2-3 minutes via backwashing.Check out this blog post for more information on the differences between Cartridge Filters and Pool Sand Filters.
