Because pool lights look cool! Just kidding, although they do look pretty cool if I may say so myself. Pool lights are essential because they allow you to swim at night. If you’ve only been swimming during the day then you’re missing half the fun of having a pool! Of course you can swim without pool lights but who would want to? You’ll never know what’s lurking at the dark and deep end of your pool at night (cue Jaws theme music).

Reasons to get pool lights

Here are some of the reasons on why you should have pool lights installed on your pool.

Aesthetic Look

Didn’t I say earlier that they look cool? In all seriousness, having pool lights makes your pool look amazing at night. Especially with LED pool lights that allow you to change the color with a click of a button. Pool lights will transform your pool into a magical cove at night, as opposed to being a dark pool that may or may have a swamp monster (or a croc) living at the deep end at night.

Peace of Mind

Dark pools are dangerous. Say it with me one more time, dark pools are dangerous. On especially dark nights, falling into a pool without light is very dangerous, it is very easy to get disoriented and bang your head on the pool surface. Another thing is if you hear a splash in the middle of the night, you can just switch on the pool lights to see what fell (or entered) into your pool so you can make decisions fast.

Night Swimming

While it is generally safe to swim at your pool at night, it’s going to be less fun if you don’t have pool lights. Without lights, you would have to be extra careful not to accidentally swim into your pool’s edges.

Night Pool Parties

This is a combination of the first two reasons. One, you don’t want to have a party around a dark pool of water. And two, you don’t want your guests to accidentally fall into the pool. And I would imagine that having a pool party around a dark pool will be no fun. And as a bonus, if you have LED pool lights, you can set the color of the lights to match the theme of your party!

Types of Pool Lights

There are three types of pool lights, halogen, incandescent, and LED pool lights. We’re not going to be talking about the first two pool lights (halogen and incandescent) simply because they’re obsolete. They suck up too much energy, they run hot, and they require a lot of maintenance. If you want more information on the older types of lights, click the button below to open our guide on the different types of pool lights and why LED pool lights are the superior choice.

When should I have pool lights installed?

As a rule of thumb, you should have pool lights installed while the pool is being built. Adding lights after the fact will only incur you a LOT of expenses. If you already have a pool without lights, wait until you have a major renovation or maintenance work scheduled so that the construction and labor costs will be combined.

I already have pool lights, I just want the new LED ones

Don’t worry too much if this is the case. LED pool light manufacturers already have taken this into account and have designed their products to be easily retrofitted into existing pool light fittings. You don’t even need an electrician or a pool man to replace your old pool lights with newer ones. Want to learn more? Conclusion

There are a lot of reasons why to get LED pool lights and no reasons why you shouldn’t. So if you’re building a pool or already have a pool with no lights (or old and busted lights) then you really should add LED lights to your shopping list. And as for our recommendation, you can’t go wrong with the Spa Electrics LED Pool lights, they’re compatible with 99% of the existing light mounts in the market, they can be installed in under 20 minutes, and most of all, they’re designed and built in Australia!
