How to Replace Your Filter Cartridge
Get crystal clear water in just a few simple steps. Here's how to do it right.
Turn Off Power
Safety first — turn off all power to your pool pump and filter system at the circuit breaker before starting.
Relieve Pressure
Open the air relief valve on top of the filter tank. Wait until the hissing stops and the pressure gauge reads zero.
Remove Old Filter
Unlock and remove the tank lid, grab the old cartridge handle and pull straight up. Wiggle gently if needed.
Clean Tank & Install New
Rinse the inside of the tank, then slide the new Water TechniX cartridge down firmly onto the manifold.
Reseal & Check
Lube the lid O-ring, replace the lid, turn power on, then slowly open the relief valve to bleed air until a steady stream of water appears. Check for leaks.
Turn Off Power
Safety first — turn off all power to your pool pump and filter system at the circuit breaker. This prevents water from pumping while you work.
Relieve Pressure
Open the air relief valve on top of the filter tank to release built-up pressure. You'll hear a hissing sound. Wait until it stops completely and the pressure gauge reads zero.
Open Tank & Remove Old Filter
Unlock and remove the filter tank lid (clamp, bolts, or threaded ring). Grab the handle of the old cartridge and pull it straight up — wiggle gently if needed.
Clean Tank & Install New Filter
Rinse any loose debris from inside the filter tank. Slide the new Water TechniX cartridge down, seating it firmly on the manifold at the bottom.
Reseal, Repressurize & Check
Clean and lubricate the lid's O-ring before securing the lid. Close the air relief valve. Turn power back on. Once running, slowly open the relief valve to bleed air — close when a steady water stream appears. Check for leaks.
How to Clean Your Filter Cartridge
Extend the life of your filter and keep your water sparkling. Follow these steps and grab the tools for a deep clean.
Thoroughly Rinse (The Right Way)
Using a garden hose with a spray nozzle (do not use a high-pressure washer), work top-down. Hold the nozzle at 45° to spray between the pleats, dislodging trapped dirt. Rotate as you go.
Deep Clean (For Oils & Grime)
Every 3–4 months, soak the cartridge overnight in a bucket with a filter cleaning solution. This breaks down stubborn oils, lotions, and mineral buildup that hosing alone can't remove.
Final Rinse & Reinstall
After soaking, rinse the cartridge thoroughly one more time. Place it back in the filter tank, secure the lid (don't forget to lubricate the O-ring!), turn the power back on, and bleed the air from the tank using the relief valve until a steady stream of water appears, then close it.
Pool Filter Questions, Answered
Cartridge filters are more efficient, trapping particles down to 10–20 microns vs 20–40 microns for sand. They also don't require backwashing, saving thousands of litres of water annually. Many modern pool owners find cartridge filters offer better long-term value, lower energy use, and superior water clarity.
Clean when the pressure gauge rises 8–10 PSI above its normal operating level, or roughly every 3–6 months during swimming season. Rinse with a garden hose to remove debris, then soak overnight in a chemical filter cleaner to break down oils and minerals.
Sizing depends on your pool volume and required turnover rate — always opt for slightly larger than strictly necessary, as bigger filters need less frequent cleaning. A quality Water TechniX cartridge typically lasts 3–5 years with proper regular cleaning.
Turn off the pump. Set the multi-port valve to 'Backwash' and run for 1–2 minutes until the sight glass runs clear. Turn off the pump, set to 'Rinse', run for 30 seconds. Turn off the pump, set back to 'Filter', then resume normal operation. Do this when the pressure gauge rises 8–10 PSI above normal.
Mr Pool Man carries high-quality Water TechniX replacement cartridges for all popular Astral Hurlcon housings including the ZX75, ZX100, ZX150, ZX200, and ZX250. Always confirm the model number on your existing cartridge or filter lid before ordering to ensure a perfect fit.
Both use pleated media for high-quality filtration. The CC100 is physically larger, handles a higher maximum flow rate, and requires less frequent cleaning. Mr Pool Man stocks replacement cartridges for both — always confirm the correct size when ordering.
Likely yes. Over time pleats degrade or become permanently clogged with oils and minerals that even chemical soaking can't fix. If your water is still cloudy after a thorough clean, a replacement cartridge is almost certainly the answer.
Essentials include a chemical filter cleaner solution for deep soaks every 3–4 months, and a high-pressure spray nozzle or Water Wand to efficiently rinse the pleats during routine maintenance. Both are available above on this page.
