How to Replace Your Filter Cartridge

Get crystal clear water in just a few simple steps. Here’s how to do it right.

1

Turn Off Power

Safety first! Turn off all power to your pool pump and filter system at the circuit breaker. This prevents any water from pumping while you're working.

2

Relieve Pressure

Open the air relief valve on top of your filter tank to release any built-up pressure. You'll hear a hissing sound. Wait until the hissing stops completely and the pressure gauge reads zero.

3

Open Tank & Remove Old Filter

Unlock and remove the filter tank lid (this might be a large clamp, bolts, or a threaded ring). Once open, grab the handle of the old cartridge and pull it straight up to remove it. You may need to wiggle it gently.

4

Clean Tank & Install New Filter

Rinse out any loose debris from the inside of the filter tank with a hose. Take your new Water TechniX cartridge and slide it down into the tank, seating it firmly on the manifold at the bottom.

5

Reseal, Repressurize & Check

Clean and lubricate the lid's O-ring before securely replacing the lid. Close the air relief valve. Turn the power back on. As the pump primes, *slowly* open the air relief valve to bleed out the air. Once a steady stream of water sprays out, close the valve. Check around the lid for any leaks.

How to Clean Your Filter Cartridge

Extend the life of your filter and keep your water sparkling. Follow these steps and get the tools you need for a deep clean.

1

Thoroughly Rinse (The Right Way)

Using a garden hose with a spray nozzle (do NOT use a high-pressure washer!), work from the top down. Hold the nozzle at a 45-degree angle to spray *between* the pleats, dislodging all the trapped dirt and debris. Rotate the filter as you go until it's visibly clean.

Pro-Tip: Make Rinsing Faster

2

Deep Clean (For Oils & Grime)

For a deep clean (recommended every 3-4 months), soak the cartridge overnight in a bucket with a filter cleaning solution. This breaks down stubborn oils, lotions, and mineral buildup that hosing alone can't remove.

Filter Cleaner 500g

A powerful formula that soaks deep to remove stubborn oils, grime, and calcium buildup, restoring filter cartridge efficiency.

3

Final Rinse & Reinstall

After soaking, rinse the cartridge thoroughly one more time. Place it back in the filter tank, secure the lid (don't forget to lubricate the O-ring!), and turn the power back on. Bleed the air from the tank using the relief valve until a steady stream of water appears, then close it.

Your Pool Filter Questions, Answered

Is a cartridge filter pool system better than a traditional sand filter?

The debate of cartridge filter vs sand filter often comes down to efficiency and water saving. Cartridge pool filters are more efficient, trapping particles down to 10-20 microns, compared to 20-40 microns for sand. They also don't require backwash pool filter routines, saving thousands of litres of water annually. While sand filters are cheaper upfront and glass pool filter media improves their performance, many modern pool owners find a best pool cartridge filter offers better long-term value, energy efficiency, and superior water clarity.

How often should I clean my pool filter cartridge and how is it done?

You should clean your pool filter cartridge when the pressure gauge increases 8-10 PSI above its normal operating pressure, or roughly every 3-6 months during swimming season. The best way to clean a cartridge pool filter is to remove the element, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose to remove debris, and then soak it overnight in a chemical filter cleaner to break down oils and minerals. This routine is key for extending the life of your pool cartridge filter.

What size pool filter do I need, and how long do pool cartridge filters last?

Sizing depends on your pool volume and required turnover rate. For example, for a 50,000 litre pool, you must select a filter and pump combination that meets the flow rate requirements. Always opt for a slightly larger filter than strictly necessary, as bigger filters mean less maintenance. A quality cartridge filter pool element, like those made by Magnum Pool Filters, typically lasts between 3 to 5 years with proper, regular cleaning.

Can you provide a simple guide on how to backwash pool filter systems?

If you have a sand or glass pool filter media system, knowing how backwash pool filter maintenance works is essential. First, turn off the pump. Second, set the multi-port valve to 'Backwash' and run the pump for 1-2 minutes until the sight glass runs clear. Third, turn off the pump, set the valve to 'Rinse', and run for 30 seconds. Finally, turn off the pump and set the valve back to 'Filter' before resuming normal operation. You should check how often should you backwash your pool sand filter, which is usually once the pressure gauge rises 8-10 PSI above normal.

Where can I find Astral pool filter cartridges like the ZX150 cartridge filter replacement?

Genuine Astral pool filters and Astral cartridge filters are widely available at pool shops Australia and major online retailers. For a high-quality, durable alternative, Mr Pool Man offers replacement pool filter cartridges for all popular housings, including the Astral Hurlcon ZX150 and ZX250 cartridge filter. What is the difference between the Waterco Trimline Cartridge Filter CC75 and the CC100 cartridge filter?

Both the Waterco Trimline Cartridge Filter CC75 and the Waterco CC100 cartridge filter use pleated media to provide high-quality filtration, making them excellent choices among Waterco pool filters. The main difference is the filtration surface area and flow rate capability: the CC100 model is physically larger, offers a higher maximum flow rate, and requires less frequent cleaning than the CC75. Mr Pool Man carries replacement cartridges for all Waterco models, so always confirm the correct Waterco filter cartridge size when ordering a replacement CC100 pool filter cartridge.

My pool water is cloudy even after filtering. Could I need a pool filter cartridge replacement?

Cloudy water can often be a sign that your old pool cartridge filter is no longer effective. Over time, the pleats degrade or become permanently clogged with oils, lotions, or fine calcium deposits (even after cleaning pool filter cartridge soaking), preventing proper particle capture. If the problem persists, you definitely need a new pool filter cartridge replacement. You can find high-quality pool filter cartridges for all major brands, including replacement Hayward pool filter cartridges and Jandy CS150 filter replacement units, available through trusted suppliers like Mr Pool Man to restore crystal-clear water.

Where are the best places to buy new pool filters online and what accessories do I need?

You can find the widest range of pool filters online from dedicated pool supply warehouses like Mr Pool Man. We specialize in high-quality replacement cartridges that fit all popular models, including the Astral ZX150 cartridge filter and Waterco Opal cartridge filter. Always use the exact original part number when ordering a replacement to ensure correct sizing.
