Yes. The Paradise uses a reversible refrigerant cycle, the same principle as a reverse-cycle air conditioner. In heating mode it extracts heat from the air and transfers it to your pool water. In chilling mode it runs the cycle in reverse, drawing heat out of the water. You switch between modes from the app or the touchscreen. Target temperature is reached within 24 to 48 hours from a cold or warm starting point.
A gas heater burns fuel to generate heat, so every dollar of running cost is a dollar of gas consumed. A heat pump does not create heat, it moves it. The Mitsubishi inverter compressor captures heat energy from the ambient air (even at low temperatures) and concentrates it into your pool water. For every 1kW of electricity consumed, the Paradise generates up to 18kW of heating output. That is why the running costs are so much lower.
Initial heat-up from cold typically takes 24 to 72 hours depending on pool size, starting water temperature, air temperature, and whether you are using a pool cover. The 18kW model will raise a 50,000L pool by about 1°C per hour in mild conditions. Once at your target temperature, the inverter holds it efficiently with minimal energy use, it does not need to reheat from scratch every time.
The water-side plumbing (cutting in bypass valves, running pipe to and from the heat pump) can be handled by a confident DIYer or plumber. The electrical connection must be done by a licensed electrician, this is a legal requirement in all Australian states. Most installs run $300 to $600 total for a straightforward pad setup. We have a list of preferred installers if you need a referral.
Very little. The main task is keeping the evaporator coil clear of leaves and debris, a light hose-down every few months is enough. The unit should have 30cm of clear airflow around the intake. There are no filters to replace and no chemicals to add. Annual pool water balance checks matter more for the heat exchanger's longevity than anything on the unit itself.
The kW heating/cooling capacity figure tells you how much heat the unit can produce or remove per hour. A higher number means faster temperature change and the ability to maintain temperature in colder ambient conditions. The power input figure (also in kW) tells you how much electricity it draws to do that. A COP (Coefficient of Performance) of 18 means 1kW in gives you up to 18kW of heating. COP stands for Coefficient of Performance. It is the ratio of heat output to electricity input. A COP of 18 means that for every 1kW of electricity consumed, the unit delivers up to 18kW of heating to your pool. This is why heat pumps are far cheaper to run than electric resistance heaters, which have a COP of 1 (one unit of electricity in, one unit of heat out). A higher COP means lower running costs. The Paradise's COP varies slightly with air temperature, it is highest on mild days and slightly lower when working in cold ambient conditions.
R32 is the current industry standard refrigerant for modern air conditioners and heat pumps, replacing older R410A. It has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) roughly one third of R410A, making it significantly more environmentally friendly. It is also more energy efficient, which contributes to the Paradise's low running costs. R32 is sealed inside the unit and poses no risk during normal operation. Any servicing involving the refrigerant circuit must be done by a licensed refrigerant technician.
