The 30-Second Summary
Why did my pool turn green/brown after the storm? Heavy rain and runoff bring three things your pool hates: dirt/debris (brown colour), bacteria (health risk), and high pH rainwater that stops your chlorine from working.
Can I fix it myself? Absolutely. You don't need to wait days for a technician or pay a call-out fee. With the right commercial-strength chemicals and a bit of elbow grease, you can turn a swamp back into sparkling water this weekend.
The Solution: Stop guessing with random bottles from the hardware store. The Water TechniX Storm & Flood Chemical Bundle contains the exact four chemicals you need to sanitise, balance, and clear the mess.
The "Storm Bundle" System: Why You Need All Four
You might be tempted to just dump chlorine in, but storm water is complex. Here is why our bundle includes four specific products to tackle the problem from every angle.
1. The Sanitiser: Stabilised Chlorine (1KG)
-
The Problem: Floodwater introduces nasty bacteria, E. coli, and organic waste.
-
The Fix: This is a powerful shock dose to kill dangerous contaminants instantly and start turning the green/brown water back to cloudy blue.
2. The Balancer: pH Down (Dry Acid) (1KG)
-
The Problem: Rainwater often has a high pH. If your pool's pH is over 7.6, your chlorine is only about 20% effective. You could dump 10kg of chlorine in, and it wouldn't work.
-
The Fix: This industrial-strength dry acid lowers the pH rapidly to the "kill zone" (7.2–7.4), ensuring your chlorine works at full strength.
3. The Heavy Lifter: Flocculant (1KG)
-
The Problem: Your pool is full of fine mud, silt, and dead algae that is too small for your filter to catch.
-
The Fix: "Floc" acts like a magnet. It grabs all those tiny particles and clumps them together into heavy debris that sinks to the floor, ready to be vacuumed to waste.
4. The Polisher: Clarifier (1L)
-
The Problem: After vacuuming, the water might still look hazy or dull.
-
The Fix: This is the finishing touch. It gathers the remaining fine particles so your filter can trap them, giving you that final "sparkle."
Your Step-by-Step Recovery Plan
Note: This process requires you to be home to monitor the pump.
Phase 1: Kill & Balance (Morning)
-
Remove Large Debris: Use your leaf rake to scoop out as many leaves and branches as possible.
-
Add pH Down: Broadcast the required amount of pH Down around the pool edges.
-
Add Chlorine: Immediately follow with a heavy shock dose of the Stabilised Chlorine.
-
Run Pump: Run the filter for 2–4 hours to circulate.
Phase 2: The "Drop" (Afternoon/Evening)
-
Add Flocculant: Pre-mix the Flocculant in a bucket of water and pour it around the pool edges.
-
Recirculate: Set your filter valve to "Recirculate" (bypassing the filter media) and run the pump for 2 hours to mix the floc thoroughly.
-
THE CRITICAL STEP: Turn the pump OFF and leave it off overnight. The water must be perfectly still for the debris to settle to the floor.
Phase 3: Vacuum to Waste (Next Morning) By morning, the water should look much clearer, but the floor will be covered in a thick layer of sludge.
WARNING: Do NOT vacuum this through your filter. It will clog a cartridge or ruin sand instantly.
-
Set your valve to "Waste" (if you have a sand filter) or open your waste line.
-
Manually vacuum the sludge directly out of the pool. Move slowly so you don't stir it up.
-
Top up the water level with the garden hose as you go.
Phase 4: The Polish (Over the next 24 hours)
-
Once the heavy sludge is gone, turn your filter back to "Filter" mode.
-
Add the Clarifier to help your filter trap the remaining haze.
-
Run your pump continuously for 24 hours, cleaning the filter cartridge or backwashing as pressure rises.
Phase 5: The "Insurance Policy" (Don't Skip This)
Once your pool is clear, the job isn't quite done. Storm runoff leaves behind invisible "food" and "seeds" for the next algae bloom. To lock in your clear water and avoid doing this all over again in two weeks, we recommend two final protectants.
1. Remove the Food Source: Water TechniX Phosphate Remover Storms wash soil and fertiliser into your pool, which are loaded with Phosphates. Think of phosphates as an "all-you-can-eat buffet" for algae. Even if your water looks clear, if the phosphate levels are high, the green will come back. Adding a dose of Phosphate Remover starves any future algae before it can grow.
2. The Final Barrier: Water TechniX Algaecide Think of chlorine as the "soldier" that kills the enemy, and Algaecide as the "shield" that stays behind. Adding a long-life algaecide creates a chemical barrier in the water that prevents algae spores from blooming, even if your chlorine levels drop slightly during the next hot day.
Why Hardware Store Chemicals Fail
You might see cheap chlorine or algaecide at the big box stores. Be careful. These are often diluted with fillers.
The Risk: You pour it in, nothing happens because the pH is wrong or the chemical is weak, and you have to go back and buy more. You end up spending more money and losing a week of swimming time.
The Mr Pool Man Difference: Our Water TechniX chemicals are commercial grade. The Storm Bundle is designed to work as a system to get it right the first time.
