What does it remove?
Water TechniX Black Spot Remover is designed to target stubborn and deeply embedded black spot algae. Unlike common algae, black spot forms strong roots within porous pool surfaces, making it difficult to eliminate with standard treatments. This powerful formula attacks the algae at its core, helping to prevent regrowth. In more severe cases, 2–3 treatments spread over 2–3 weeks may be necessary to completely eradicate the infestation.
How does the formula work?
Our slow dissolving, concentrated formula gradually releases high strength granular chlorine over 24 hours, ensuring prolonged exposure to the algae for more effective treatment. This sustained release breaks down the algae's tough outer layer and penetrates into the root system, helping to kill it completely and reduce the chance of it returning.
How should I apply it?
Application is simple, but for best results, it’s important to follow the correct method based on your pool surface:
- Pebblecrete, Concrete or Quartzon Pools: Apply the product directly onto the affected area with the pump running. Brushing the algae beforehand with a stainless steel pool brush will help remove its waxy protective layer and improve penetration.
- Fiberglass, Vinyl or Tiled Pools: While black spot algae does not typically grow on these surfaces, this product can still be used as a powerful chlorine boost to help sanitise and clear up resistant organic matter or algae blooms. For safe application, always pre dissolve the product in a large bucket of pool water before adding it directly in front of your return jets with the pump running. Avoid adding undissolved product directly to the surface as it may cause bleaching or surface damage.
What ongoing water conditions should be checked? Maintaining balanced water is essential for the treatment to work effectively and to prevent future outbreaks. We recommend:
- pH levels: Maintain between 7.2 and 7.4. Closer to 7.2 for optimal chlorine effectiveness.
- Chlorine levels: Keep chlorine within recommended range during treatment to support sanitisation.
- Filtration: Run the pump continuously for at least 24 hours during and after treatment for maximum circulation.
-
Check metal levels before treatment: Elevated levels of metals in pool water may react with high strength chlorine treatments and cause dark staining. To minimise the risk of this, we recommend ensuring metal levels are low or treating the water with a metal remover prior to application.
How long does treatment take?
The Black Spot Remover starts working immediately upon application and continues to release active chlorine over a 24 hour circulation period. In severe cases, where algae is deeply rooted or widespread, a second or third application spaced 7 days apart may be required to fully eliminate the problem.
Can I use this in a fiberglass or vinyl pool? While black spot algae typically does not grow in fiberglass, vinyl, or tiled pools, this product can still serve as a powerful sanitiser to help combat other resistant algae or organic build ups. To use safely in these pools:
- Always pre dissolve the product in a large bucket of pool water.
- Add the solution near your return jets with the pump running.
- Avoid adding undissolved product directly to the pool surface to prevent potential bleaching.
Can I use this in a concrete or tiled pool?
Yes, add directly to affected spot with the pump running.
