How To Correctly Measure Your Pool Cartridge Filter

How to Replace Your Cartridge Filter

Before reading on, check out this video to guide you through the steps that we've prepared for you in this blog.

With such a huge range of cartridge filters available online, finding a replacement for your particular application can be a bit daunting. Here we explain how to correctly measure your existing cartridge filter, which helps to narrow down your search.

You need to take three measurements into account

  • Overall Length
  • Diameter
  • Hole Diameter

We'll format it this way:

Overall Length x Diameter x Hole Diameter

The best way to ensure you are purchasing the right filter cartridge for your application is to match up the new cartridges dimensions with your existing cartridge you are looking at replacing.

Yes, this involves taking your old cartridge out of its housing and measuring it with a tape measure.

These dimensions are listed in the description of each and every one of our filters.

Overall Length

Measure through the inside hole from one side to the other, this will ensure any small lips around the hole are included in the measurement, which may change the length.

Diameter

Measure the top of the filter directly from one side to the other.

Hole Diameter

Measure the filter hole from one side to the other.

Then, marry up your appropriate cartridge on the below table, starting with the Overall Length. Note all measurements are in mm (millimetres).

Tip: To extend the life of your cartridge, give it a thorough clean every couple of months. Give it a good hose down then soak it overnight in a tub of clean water with some of our specially formulated Zodiac Filter Cleaner for a good 12 hours. After soaking, give it a good rinse and it should be good as new!

Spa Cartridge Filters

Even though they can be much smaller, spa cartridges run off the same pool cartridge filter measuring principle as above. The only thing you'll have to look out for to ensure you're purchasing the right one (if it applies to your cartridge) is the thread; they either come in fine or course. Some spa cartridges do not have threads.

Time for a cool change

Can't find your cartridge model on our list up top or in our shop? There's a chance that they're no longer in production. Maybe it's time to move on and replace your filter set with something newer an more efficient.
