What is black spot algae?

Black spot is a stubborn, chlorine-resistant algae that roots deeply into pool surfaces. It appears as small black or dark green spots that feel rough to the touch. Standard algaecides and shocking won't remove it. You need a targeted treatment.

By adding Black Spot Remover granules, you're super chlorinating the water to kill algae at the root.

SAFETY: read before using

Do NOT swim for at least 48 hours after application. Confirm chlorine 2 to 4 ppm and pH 7.2 to 7.6 before re-entry.

Wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask or P2 respirator. Do not breathe in the dust or granules. This product contains trichloroisocyanuric acid (900g/kg). Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

For vinyl and fibreglass pools: Never apply granules directly to surfaces. Always use the skimmer sock or basket method to avoid bleaching or damage. Our support team cannot assist with bleached liners caused by improper application. Follow the instructions for your surface.

For tile, quartzon, and mosaic pools: Granules must not contact the surface directly. Use the skimmer sock method to dissolve the product safely. Undissolved granules landing on mosaic tiles can cause damage. We are not liable for surface damage caused by incorrect application.

Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place.

Emergency: Poisons Information 13 11 26. If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.

Troubleshooting: What if...

  • Spots aren't gone after treatment? Black Spot Remover stays active for up to 7 days. If spots remain after 7 days, a second application may be needed. Brush affected areas again before re-applying. Heavier infestations can require two full treatment cycles.
  • I have a vinyl pool and applied granules directly to spots. What now? Rinse immediately with water. Note that our support team cannot reverse bleaching or liner damage caused by direct application. Always use the skimmer sock or basket method for vinyl pools.
  • I have mosaic tiles and granules landed on the surface? Rinse the area immediately. Undissolved granules can etch or stain mosaic tiles. To prevent this, always use the skimmer sock method. We are not liable for damage caused by incorrect application.
  • Black spot keeps coming back? Check your phosphate levels. High phosphates feed black spot. Also ensure your filter is clean and running effectively. Low chlorine and poor circulation are common root causes.
  • Can I swim before 48 hours? No. Wait at least 48 hours and test water chemistry (chlorine 2 to 4 ppm, pH 7.2 to 7.6) before swimming.

Black Spot FAQs

Black spot returns when underlying conditions aren't fixed: high phosphates, low chlorine, poor circulation, or dirty filters. After treatment, maintain chlorine at 2 to 4 ppm, run pump daily, and test phosphate levels regularly.

When used correctly (spot treatment for concrete/pebble, skimmer sock or basket method for vinyl, fibreglass, tile, and mosaic) it won't stain. Direct contact with granules on vinyl, fibreglass, or mosaic tiles can cause bleaching or etching. Always follow the surface specific method shown above. Our support team cannot assist with damage from improper application.

Dead algae turns grey or white within 24 to 48 hours. Brush away dead spots and vacuum to waste. The product remains active for up to 7 days. If spots persist after 7 days, a second application may be needed.

Yes. Black Spot Remover works in all pool types including salt, chlorine, and magnesium pools. The application method depends on your surface type, not your sanitation system.

After dead algae is brushed and vacuumed, use a non-chlorine shock like Oxi Shock to oxidise and remove remaining organic waste. Think of it as the garbage man for your pool. It clears out what the treatment left behind without adding more chlorine.
